Many have noticed that Philo 173 is not in the course offerings for AY 2019-2020.  Why is that?

The short answer is that Philo 173 is very similar to Ethics 1, and so will be permanently substituted by the new GE course.  The long-ish answer you can read here.

If you are an AA Student following the 2005 curriculum, you have no problems because Philo 173 is not a required course for you.  You may take any course that has been tagged as "SSP Elective" to fill up your 15 units SSP requirement.

If you are an AA student following the 2011 curriculum, you do have a problem because Philo 173 is a required course under the Common Courses cluster.  How do we solve this?

The Faculty of Education has decided that Philo 173 can be substituted by Ethics 1.

You may notice that Philo 173 and Ethics 1 are similar courses in terms of knowledge but somewhat different in approach and skills developed.  Thus, if you have taken and passed Philo 173 earlier, you may still enroll Ethics 1 as an SSP elective.

If you are not an AA Student, ask your program chair for advise regarding course substitution.
